Metamucil during pregnancy is the most widely used laxative for constipation. It is a bulk forming laxative and is one of the best acceptable medications to be used to treat constipation. Metamucil increases the bulk in your stool, and thus helps to push the faeces from the intestine to the rectum. Like other bulk forming laxatives it also absorbs water in the intestine and makes the stool softer and easier to pass.

Although according to FDA this laxative does not get the prescribed labelling but yet may be prescribed by your health care professional. Use this drug only when your doctor approves otherwise not.

Metamucil may also be used to help relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. It can be taken orally as directed by your doctor. If you are using Metamucil as over the counter prescription then you must follow all directions on the product package. If you have any confusions or doubt then you should better ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Always remember to take Metamucil with a full glass of water or other liquid. If you are taking Metamucil wafers then chew them thoroughly before swallowing. For Metamucil as husk or powder forms take only measured dose according to the directions on the product label. You may add more liquid to the mixture if it becomes too thick. Sometimes rarely, Metamucil had been inhaled while preparing it which might cause nasal allergy.

It will be wise to see your doctor for the Dosage which is decided only after keeping your age, medical condition, and response to treatment in consideration. Do not self increase your dose or increase the frequency of this drug more often than directed. Also, remember to take Metamucil at least 2 hours gap from your other medications like iron, calcium, folic acid etc.

Metamucil takes some time to start acting and you should wait at least 24hrs to 72hrs days to see its action. So, once started use this medication regularly and do not stop in between if you see it working slow initially. In any case do not take Metamucil for more than 7 days unless directed by your doctor.

Consult your doctor if you see no change in your bowels or if it worsens, or if rectal bleeding during pregnancy occurs after starting Metamucil. Apart from Metamucil during pregnancy is being also used for other reasons like Irritable Colon.
