The process of having a baby is no easy job that can be accomplished by deciding on the baby’s names, buying creches or making nurseries. Out of the serious and regular problems, one that occurs most often and keeps repeating itself in most cases is constipation during pregnancy.

The main reason for constipation being that bowel movement is severely affected by rise in hormones that reduce the efficiency of the gut. Apart from this, constipation in pregnant women is caused by worries, anxiety, low fiber diet and accumulation of fats in the body that make it unfit.

Constipation during pregnancy may have several varying effect on different people depending on hormonal growth and bodily conditions. However the main complications are feeling exhausted, nauseated, and a constant uneasiness due to gas. A common cause for care during this period is the growth of ‘Hemorrhoids’. It widens the veins around the anus causing severe pain and bleeding occasionally. What’s more is that all this just doesn’t affect your body and lets you off but it’s bound to have a lasting effect on the mood which most commonly leaves the person irritated or angry.

Constipation in pregnant women can be cured by keeping a tab on intake of food, regular exercising, regular visits to the loo, rich high fiber diet, and intake of huge amount of water at regular intervals. Most importantly, several supplements too help reduce constipation. However care must be taken not to have iron supplements as they will have an opposite effect of the cure and drastically deteriorate the condition. LAX pills are also ill advised and best avoided.

Regular visit to the doctor along with proper and prescribed evaluation can further reduce the problem of constipation.

Milk of magnesia for constipation during pregnancy is a temporary relief of constipation. More commonly used for indigestion, acidity it is a saline laxative i.e. it pulls salt or saline solution into the intestines from the blood. This increase in fluid then provides a flushing within the intestines but prevents diarrhoea.

It is very important to follow the instructions given by your doctor like Shake well the container before using, take it with a glass of water or juice and certainly follow it with good amounts of fluids. Milk of magnesia is to be kept in air tight container.

Milk of magnesia is not suitable in chronic cases for constipation because of its temporary action. So, a prolong treatment with it serves no in fact doubling the dose may cause harsh effects on intestine like diarrhoea. Interactions with milk of magnesia has occurred with tetracycline antibiotics such as Achromycin and Sumycin, so it is better to discuss with your physician all possible interactions and proven side effects it can produce in short or long run. Especially, patients with severe chronic kidney disease need to watch out of overdose to avoid magnesium toxicity.

Pregnant ladies who have history of any allergy or asthma should also reconsider before starting with this medication, as they might be at an increased risk for a reaction from it. Your medical health care provider should always know your past, present allergy history. The pregnant lady should not take milk of magnesia if there has been a previous reaction to it or any other laxatives. Watch out for any skin rash, hive or itching and if occurs discontinue with the use immediately and sit down with your health care provider for choosing some other laxative.

In general pregnant ladies are advised to avoid any additional drug, alcohol during pregnancy or lactation as it can cause potential danger or an injury to the baby. Even laxatives as a rule should not be used during pregnancy without your doctor advice.

There are no known adverse effects of milk of magnesia on sexual function of the pregnant lady or development of the foetus. Laxatives generally should not be regularly used as a long run medicine or a supplement as its prolonged or excessive use may result in bowel dependence or an imbalance in the blood minerals. One need to watch out for few alarming signs like rectal bleeding or black or tardy stools or “coffee-ground” looking like vomitus and inform to your doctor immediately. Milk of magnesia should be discontinued if nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain is present.

This medication is for the short-term relief of constipation and should not be used for an extended period of time. Prolonged use can result in bowel dependence. In smaller antacid doses, the product can probably be used safely for long periods of time. Diarrhoea, fainting, weakness which although are minor side effects of milk of magnesia for constipation during pregnancy due to it’s prolong use and can be avoided when it is taken with food and not empty stomach.
