If you are pregnant and feel cramps in your abdomen (the area around your stomach) don’t panic immediately. Milk of magnesia for constipation during pregnancy is a temporary relief of constipation. More commonly used for indigestion, acidity it is a saline laxative i.e. it pulls salt or saline solution into the intestines from the blood. This increase in fluid then provides a flushing within the intestines but prevents diarrhoea.

It is very important to follow the instructions given by your doctor like Shake well the container before using, take it with a glass of water or juice and certainly follow it with good amounts of fluids. Milk of magnesia is to be kept in air tight container.

Milk of magnesia is not suitable in chronic cases for constipation because of its temporary action. So, a prolong treatment with it serves no in fact doubling the dose may cause harsh effects on intestine like diarrhoea. Interactions with milk of magnesia has occurred with tetracycline antibiotics such as Achromycin and Sumycin, so it is better to discuss with your physician all possible interactions and proven side effects it can produce in short or long run. The pregnant lady should not take milk of magnesia if there has been a previous reaction to it or any other laxatives. Watch out for any skin rash, hive or itching and if occurs discontinue with the use immediately and sit down with your health care provider for choosing some other laxative.

In general pregnant ladies are advised to avoid any additional drug, alcohol during pregnancy or lactation as it can cause potential danger or an injury to the baby. Even laxatives as a rule should not be used during pregnancy without your doctor advice.

There are no known adverse effects of milk of magnesia on sexual function of the pregnant lady or development of the foetus. Laxatives generally should not be regularly used as a long run medicine or a supplement as its prolonged or excessive use may result in bowel dependence or an imbalance in the blood minerals. One need to watch out for few alarming signs like rectal bleeding or black or tardy stools or “coffee-ground” looking like vomitus and inform to your doctor immediately.
